Reviewing the LG Dare

Dare to be different - the LG Dare on Verizon Wireless features a full touchscreen with 3G capabilities that will make it one of the most popular devices for people seeking phone that’s bad to the bone.

The LG Dare is slim and sleek but packs a ferocious punch, offering incredibly fast connectivity for web browsing and loads of multimedia functionality. Top of the line photo and video capabilities go far beyond your run of the mill phone - how about customizing and editing your photos right on your phone and uploading them directly to your social networking website of choice? The LG Dare can truly do it all!

While the phone is flashy and fun, LG and Verizon Wireless have made the Dare functionality in mind. As a result, the LG Dare is simple to learn and easy to use.

LG Dare

LG’s latest handset, dares to take things in a different direction. The appropriately named LG Dare presents a few tricks we haven’t seen before in the touch-screen phone genre. This phone basically has a 3.2 megapixel camera which can be used both for images and also for video(beating the iPhone which formerly had a 2 megapixel camera). The most advanced cameras we’ve seen on a touch-screen phone–its 3.2-megapixel camera has settings like face detection, noise reduction, panorama photo stitching, and a SmartPic technology designed for taking photos in low light. The built-in camcorder can even record high-speed video and play it back in slow-motion, which is a first for U.S. camera phones. The screen has 3 inch display which is adequately bright. The touchscreen technology used by Verizon is so pumping that just a tap on the screen and you are off on a new page.

The other bright feature of this set is that it consists of a shortcut menu, where you can drag and drop your favorite applications with just a drag of your finger. It sounds cool, doesn’t it?

But I still wouldn’t say that this will be more than a match for the iPhone. It lacks Wi-fi features which is a great drawback.

Although the iPhone has built a huge market all over the world with its revolutionary technology, I hope the LG Dare can offer competition to it. It’ll be great when we have the two of them in the ring. If you are sick of the iPhone hype and are looking for an alternative to it, then you can dare to go for the LG Dare. But mind you, no Wi-fi features.

The LG Dare is priced competitively at $199 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a two-year service agreement. The Dare VX9700 is still scheduled to be out by mid-July. Have a look at the gallery.

Foxytunes - An addon for Firefox/IE

Some of you must have noticed that the blog went offline for a few hours yesterday. This was due to a server upgrade by my host. So I left the previous topic on for a bit more before posting this one. I regret the inconvenience, and apologise to my readers.

I’ve been a user of Windows Media Player for a long time and never really gone for other audio players. But the problem with Windows Media Player is that it is a bit on the slower side. So when I heard of an extension that integrates music right into Firefox, I installed FoxyTunes immediately and was ready to test it. FoxyTunes gives you control of your favorite music player from within Firefox, so there’s no more switching windows to change your song. The interface is easy to use and is highly customizable. When opened, it shows a navigation array with buttons for Play, Pause, Mute, Next Track, Last Track, Volume, and the useful Show Player, which pops up your music player. There’s also a Hide Player button, as well as a music Search tool, keyboard shortcuts, skins, and a mini player that places the app controls on your desktop.

Foxtunes

Supported players include iTunes, Winamp, RealPlayer, XMPlay and Last.fm, as well as nearly two dozen others and a “custom player” option. The lyric and album art searches have been expanded with FoxyTunes’ new music portal, which provides feeds from Google, YouTube, Amazon.com, Last.fm, Wikipedia, and several online radio stations to make music discovery easier.

FoxyTunes’ strengths are in the depth of available features plus the level of customization. Weaknesses? Only that you’ll wish all Firefox add-ons were this good.

The cool thing about FoxyTunes is that it’s also cross-platform. It runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac. Even though this is a Firefox column, I guess I should mention that they even have an Internet Explorer version.
One of the great features that floored me was the amount of players supported in FoxyTunes. FoxyTunes allows you to select from a list of over 30 media players. Everyone has their favorite media player and if you can’t find it in this list, you must’ve built the player yourself.Foxytunes - Features

Hover over the toolbar icon that looks like a music note (track info) and you’ll immediately see the artist, title, album, and graphic of the album. Click on it and it becomes sticky. It stays visible until you click the close icon (X). Nice feature.

Sleeping at your desk is probably great for entrepreneurs at 3:00 in the morning, which is why I think the hidden feature of an alarm clock and sleep timer is definitely necessary.

FoxyTunes is great for music enthusiasts overall.

Here we have  a detailed  feature list :-

Basic features

  • Tiny, unobtrusive and customizable
  • Multiplatform - works on MS Windows, Linux and Mac OS X
  • Supports more than 30 media players, will support more players in future versions
  • Also supports Mozilla Thunderbird, SeaMonkey and Flock
  • Position anywhere in the browser - on the status bar or on one of the toolbars
  • Volume controls
  • Seek Slider
  • Configurable keyboard shortcuts
  • Currently playing track information
  • Customizable and collapsible
  • Auto-hide
  • Skinnable and localizable.
  • Automatically launch your player when needed
  • Pop up and hide the player window with a click
  • Correctly shows track information encoded in any language, supports Unicode
  • Alarm Clock and Sleep Timer
  • No third-party controller applications and plugins - everything is done efficiently by the FoxyTunes extension

FoxyTunes Planet

  • Integrated with FoxyTunes Planet Website
  • One click access to a world of music resources related to what’s currently playing

Advanced features

  • Built-in Signatunes - music signatures for email, blog and forums
  • Automatically finds and displays album covers
  • Music Web searches - lyrics, images, info, video and much more
  • FoxyTunes Mini desktop widget with its own tabbed mini browser
  • Shows recently played song history
  • Stream podcasts directly from the Web to your media player
  • Subscribe to podcasts (only with supporting players)
  • Stream media files (mp3’s, m3u’s etc.) directly from the Web to your media player
  • Optional extra - TwittyTunes - post your currently playing songs to Twitter with a click

So now I’ve got a sweet little addon why plays me my favorite music, while I am online. So if you are an avid internet user, and want to catch up on your music doing so, then FoxyTunes is the one for. And for once it doesn’t matter if you are a Firefox user or an IE user.

10 Must-Have freewares for your PC

There are thousands of softwares out there on the whole wide web, some are paid while others are free.  I’ve put up a list of 10 freewares that act as magnificent alternatives to the big boys. These are small, fast, efficient and do the job for you. Here goes the list:

Firefox1. Mozilla Firefox: It should be the unanimous choice now for everyone to use Firefox. It took some years for it to sink in that Firefox has always been better than Internet Explorer which ruled the browser world for the past decade. Well, now it is time for a change.

Mozilla Firefox is a fast, full-featured Web browser. Firefox includes pop-up blocking; tab-browsing; integrated Google search; simplified privacy controls; a streamlined browser window that shows you more of the page than any other browser; and a number of additional features that work with you to help you get the most out of your time online. [http://www.mozilla.com]

CCleaner2. CCleaner: I didn’t have this freeware a year back. At that time my PC was cluttered up, bogged down and had various other problems. All the result of me not keeping the PC clean. This simple freeware cleans up all your system for junk data, invalid registries, all browsing history and much more.

CCleaner is a system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. [http://www.ccleaner.com]

AVG3. AVG - Antivirus Free: Granted that there is a professional version to this Antivirus. But you wouldn’t find a much better free one than this. I used Norton Antivirus a few years back and after the subscription period was over, vowed never to go for it again. I looked for a free one for the time being so that I could look around for a good one. I found this and since then I haven’t had a reason to opt for a change.

AVG Free Edition is the well-known antivirus protection tool. AVG Free is available free of charge to home users for the life of the product. [http://free.grisoft.com]

KLite4. KLite Media Codec Pack: I’m never too interested in having more than one media player or audio player, so I used the default Windows Media Player to play everything, well almost. I found out that the WMP did not play AVI files and other DVDs, so someone recommended KLite Media Codec Pack and its been a real treasure. It plays almost all the files I’ve thrown at it, even FLV files and it has a simple player which doesn’t use up much of the resources.

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is a collection of codecs, DirectShow filters and tools. Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video formats. [http://www.codecguide.com]

Pidgin5. Pidgin: This is a useful IM open source utility. I came across this when I installed Ubuntu on my system. Before I came across this, I had to open up quite a few messengers to access friends in different accounts. But this one utility allowed me to access friends from Yahoo, MSN, Gmail, AIM and even IRC.

Pidgin is a multi-protocol Instant Messaging client that allows you to use all of your IM accounts at once. [http://www.pidgin.im]

Thunderbird6. Mozilla Thunderbird: Another great freeware from Mozilla. This allows you to check mail from your various email clients. I wasn’t much of a fan until recently and have been using it for a couple of months. It was getting pretty tiring to keep opening all the mail accounts to check the mail. It is faster now.

Thunderbird makes e-mailing safer, faster, and easier with such features as intelligent spam filters, a built-in RSS reader, and quick search. [http://www.mozilla.com]

Spybot7. Spybot Search & Destroy: You have an antivirus and now you need an antispyware. Here is Spybot Search & Destroy for you. Cleans up all suspicious cookies, adware and spyware. Not much for the eyes, but does its job anyway.

Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove a multitude of adware files and modules from your computer. Spybot also can clean program and Web-usage tracks from your system, which is especially useful if you share your computer. [http://www.safer-networking.org]

Irfanview8. Irfanview: Irfanview is a simple image viewer which does the job magnificently. I hated the Windows Picture Viewer on sight, looked for an alternative and found this.

IrfanView is a fast and compact image viewer/converter. It is trying to be simple for beginners and powerful for professionals. Many supported file formats and features. [http://www.irfanview.com]

GIMP9. GIMP: This is a free open-source image editor which does powerful jobs with pictures. Also called as the poor man’s photoshop, but does most of the work that Photoshop can do.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. It is a powerful piece of software with capabilities not found in any other free software product. [http://www.gimp.org]

uTorrent10. uTorrent: A simple and powerful P2P sharing utility. Doesn’t use up much of the system resources and does the job efficiently.

uTorrent is a powerful and efficient BitTorrent client for Windows. Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in uTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading, and Mainline DHT. [http://www.utorrent.com]

So that concludes the list, but there are more out there, some that I may not know of. If you too have found better alternatives then let me know too. But for those of you who are still searching for the right choice, you needn’t go further.

Mozilla Firefox-3 Review

Greetings,

It’s  more than a month since the last post, but here is news anyway and a review for you. This post is courtesy of Maaz, the latest addition to the GX Team. We are looking to get more posts every week and that isn’t really possible for a single person to do. Not with universities, exams, vacations and other distractions. So I will be posting on here along with Syed as part of the revival program on this blog.

Firefox 3

After 17 months of betas and alphas Mozilla finally came up with a grand Firefox 3. Almost everything in this  open-source web browser has improved, from back buttons to bookmarks, address bars to add-ons , passwords to performance etc. We’ve been using Firefox-3 for a few days now since its release and its been quite impressive. This browser is fast, renders accurately and has never crashed yet. Multiple tabs and windows, complex pages…Firefox 3 can handle it all with no fuss at all.

Even though there are no new revolutionary features which Firefox is known for, the new release is just as awesome. The most interesting thing about this new browser is the  address bar, also called the ‘awesome’ bar which acts more like a search bar. When you type into the address bar Firefox-3 does not only show the recent URLs but it also searches your history and your bookmarks for any text that matches what you’re typing, including the descriptions.

Awesome Bar

On one hand this is very useful, but if you  go around a thousand sites or so, this will clutter up the drop-down box. Having two lines for each entry instead of one also adds to the overwhelming nature of the display. The title of the page is highlighted followed by the URL in green.

Back Button

The back button or the return button has been prepped up to look a glossy green which is the first thing you would notice on starting it up.

The interface is freshened up but is largely the same as before. Unlike IE7’s changes, you won’t have trouble finding things in the menu system or the toolbars. There are only some small changes to the way text selection works.

The malware prevention system in Firefox-3 really seems to work well. It took us some searching, but we finally managed to find an infected site. Rather than load the page, Firefox 3 threw up a huge, red warning page urging us not to visit. No one’s going to miss this alert.

AddonsA big part of what makes Firefox so special to power users is its extensibility with extensions, add-ons, plug-ins and themes, and Firefox 3’s Add-ons dialog got the attention it deserved. The Fox’s Add-Ons menu is more robust and intuitive on at least two fronts. You can search and install extensions and themes right from the pop-up box, no browsing required.

When it comes to downloading never wonder where a download came from, or went to, again. Gran Paradiso’s (Beta Version of Firefox 3) download manager lets you search through recent files, resume big downloads after a crash or restart, and lets you keep an eye on your transfers in the status bar.

Much like iTunes’ Smart Playlists, Firefox 3’s new Smart Bookmarks function can analyze your browsing habits and create lists of links based on it. The default bookmark toolbar only comes with three standards, “Most Visited,” “Recently Bookmarked,” and “Recent Tags” (more on that later), but it’s not too hard to make your own.

Firefox’s engineers claim that their third major release is 9.3 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 in JavaScript performance, and 2.7 times faster than Firefox 2. This means snappier browser performance when you’re using webapps like Gmail, Remember the Milk, and more. Mozilla Firefox 3 is the safest, and most feature-rich Web browser available on any platform and we recommend it to one and all. This is one area where Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux users can simply agree: Firefox is without peer, and regardless of which browser you’re currently using–be it a previous version of Firefox, any version of Internet Explorer, or, heaven forbid, Apple’s buggy Safari–you need to upgrade to Firefox 3 immediately. I recommend Firefox 3 without hesitation and without caveat, as it is one of those very rare software products, and a key tool in our own personal computing arsenal. No software is perfect, but Firefox is close enough. According to reports, Firefox shares jumped 4% this time around. IE7 is really facing the heat from Firefox. The fan base for Firefox is rapidly increasing and it won’t be too long before we see Firefox in offices, corporates where IE is still given priority.

Fast-DialThere is also an addon in Firefox which gives Opera users a chance to move to Firefox. The Fast-Dial addon does just that, it gives fast dialling options for the users.

Let’s give Mozilla a high-five for another successful release. If you still haven’t got Firefox, what are you waiting for? There is no time like now, so get it now right here.

Weekly Review : Mr. Javodotcom

Mr. Javodotcom

I have the first GX Weekly review this Sunday and there is no better blog than to start of with a blog that I’ve admired ever since I started blogging. I came across this blog through Entrecard and I’ve learnt quite a lot from this blog. The blog is Mr. Javodotcom and if you are a new blogger, it is a must that you go through the blog.

It was a month back that I started out on my blogging even before this blog, I was both new to Mr. Javodotcom Entrecard and to blogging. So I randomly starting dropping Entrecards and I came across Mr. Javo’s blog. I admit, I wasn’t impressed at first but then I started sifting through his posts and that was how I started out. And from then on, I’ve been a regular reader and subscriber to his blog.

Here’s how he describes himself “Hi, my name is Javier but everyone call me Javo. I’m a young Venezuelan guy, student of Telecommunication’s Engineering and partial-time blogger. ”

The blog is an excellent source for starting out for any new blogger out there, the blog contains online marketing information, blogging resources and guides to starting out on blogging. It is currently ranked 200,672 on Alexa which is not bad for a blog, has a google page rank of 3 and has about 150 subscribers.

Don’t get fooled by the english, you might be better at english than him but he could be a better blogger than you. This just reinforces my belief that more than the language it is the content that matters, no matter if you are not an expert in english.

Mr.Javodotcom is becoming really popular and rightly so. So, for all of you starters out there, head directly to Mr.Javodotcom and for all those of you wanting to monetize your blog and improvise on your blog, Mr.Javo has it there for all of you.

Sony VAIO TZ- VGN-TZ38GN/X

Sony VAIO TZ

There is the VAIO TZ - VGN - TZ38GN/X from SONY which is a bit different from the rest because of its Flash memory with its rich display, impeccable taste with the exquisitely textured Premium Carbon Black finish. The 48GB flash memory, bright, vivid 11.1” LCD and long battery life keep you working efficiently for extended sessions. TPM technology provides added security and the light weight means easy portability. It comes powered with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a 48 GB Flash memory which in my opinion isn’t bad for a Flash memory but for a Laptop a memory of 48 GB is never enough and the transfer speed will also dip due to this. Apart from that, it is made up of a 4.7 mm slim display with White LED. It comes pre-installed with Windows Vista Business Premium, which is a drawback for me, as I’ve never got hold of Vista. Battery power is 12 hours which lies between mediocre and good. It weighs a cool 1170 gm which makes it super light and easily portable. It contains a pre-installed memory of 2 GB RAM with one slot for extendable memory. The graphics accelerator is Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 which doesn’t make it real good for gaming. A 11.1′ inch display is what you would get for this laptop.

Other than this, you would get the standard features of all other laptops DVD drives, Wifi wireless, PC card slots, Memory slots, bluetooth, and in-built camera in the front, a finger-print sensor, a docking station and a long list of included software.

It contains an additional security feature TCG Ver.1.2 compliant Trusted Platform Module (TPM) of which I have very less knowledge. I have no idea of how much it can secure the laptop. The rest of it is what you would find on a normal laptop and needs no telling about.

It comes at a price tag of Rs. 139,900, that would be around $3500 which is a bit on the higher site considering its specifications. I would give it a rating of 3.0/5, it scores only points for its lightweight, security and a unique Flash memory. I wouldn’t go for it, if I were a heavy user. But for people starting out or for the ones who just need a laptop to keep them connected with their loved one or even office use, this is the right piece for you. But no heavy usage, mind you. I must admit that it sure looks pleasing to the eyes. Have a look at what it has to offer at its official site.

Updates on the blog

Update

To continue from where I left off yesterday, I was working on the blog a bit, tweaking it and putting up a few things. The Entrecard widget was added after I changed the account details a bit. Hadn’t visited Entrecard except to approve ads, but nevertheless I had quite a few credits in my account. The only drawback of Entrecard is that it doesn’t allow for multiple sites, though they claim to be working on it. Those credits will go a long way in promoting the blog since the readers have decreased during the long stay away. Apart from that the MyBlogLog widget too was put up to keep track of the visitors to the blog.

The hottest and the biggest update is that we will be reviewing blogs, sites and whatever you’ve got. All you’ve got to do is fill in this form on the reviewing page and you might just notice your blog on here next week. And all this is for absolutely no charge. You might want to do us a favour by placing a text link on of this blog on your site for the week your blog is reviewed. But it is left entirely to your discretion. If you want your site or blog reviewed, hurry up and fill in the form. Thats all about it for now. We will be giving you daily updates till the blog is up and running full strength.
